Museum Apprentice Wins Engineering Student Achiever Award

30 June 2009

Daniel Perks, a junior apprentice at the Royal Air Force Museum's Michael Beetham Conservation Centre, was recently presented with the 'Engineering Student Achiever Award' 2009 as part of the Celebration of Work Awards managed by the Telford College of Arts and Technology (TCAT).

Daniel, aged 20 from Telford, was nominated for the 'Engineering Student Achiever Award' by his company representative Mr Tim Wallis, Manager of the Museum’s Michael Beetham Conservation Centre. Daniels award recognises the increasing and progressive development that he has shown throughout his 2 years in the scheme.

Having worked for the Museum for almost 2 years as part of a 5½ year apprentice placement, Daniel has just completed his two year National Certificate in Engineering course.

The Modern Apprentice Scheme provides a work-based training and development for 16 – 24 years olds who have left full-time education. Two days a week are spent at college and three days are spent in the workplace.

The location of the Museum's Michael Beetham Conservation Centre and the Defence College of Aeronautical Engineering offers a unique training opportunity. The scheme also addresses a widely recognised need to fill the growing Heritage Aviation skills shortage in the United Kingdom. The MBCC technicians will become qualified and skilled to work on the conservation and preservation of historic aircraft and more.

The Museum's newly appointed MBCC Training Manager, Mr Mike Shepherd, will join the Museum in mid-August and will be taking the scheme to the next level.
